Saratoga and Los Altos Hills representatives to lead agency in new year
Sunnyvale, Calif. – At its January meeting, the Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE) Board of Directors elected a new Chair and Vice Chair to one-year terms. For 2024, Saratoga Councilmember Tina Walia will serve as Chair, and Los Altos Hills Councilmember George Tyson will serve as Vice Chair.
Tina Walia has served on the Saratoga city council since 2020; she served as Vice Mayor in 2021 and Mayor in 2022.
Chair Walia joined the SVCE Board of Directors in 2021 and served as Vice Chair in 2023. During this time, she was Chair of the SVCE Executive Committee and sat on the Finance and Administration Committee, CEO Search Ad Hoc Committee and Transition Ad Hoc Committee. As Vice Chair, Walia voted to approve three long term contracts for renewable energy projects and supported the agency in its selection of the new CEO, Monica Padilla, who will succeed Girish Balachandran after his retirement in April 2024.
“SVCE has technical expertise from an amazingly qualified staff, and strong executive leadership,” said Chair Walia. “l am committed to leading the board and staff towards our mission of reducing emissions and creating a safe, healthy region for all. Providing clear direction and collaborating with all stakeholders will lead to effective policy decisions for the agency and each community it serves.”
George Tyson was elected to the Los Altos Hills council in 2018 and served as Mayor in 2022.
Vice Chair Tyson has served on the SVCE Board of Directors since 2019, and previously served as Vice Chair in 2022 and Chair in 2023. Since 2019 Vice Chair Tyson has sat on the Executive Committee, Risk Oversight Committee, and CEO Search Ad Hoc Committee and Transition Ad Hoc Committee.
“SVCE is on the cusp of exciting new things,” said Vice Chair Tyson. “Our customer programs are expanding, and the agency continues growing. I look forward to working with the rest of the board, staff and incoming CEO on the next phase that will lead us to deeper emission reductions and provide even more value to our residents and businesses.”
As a joint powers agency, SVCE is governed by a board of directors comprised of one elected representative from each member community.
