Chief Operating Officer Role Added to SV Clean Energy

COO guides energy procurement to reach emissions reduction goals

Sunnyvale, Calif. – Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE) recently appointed Monica Padilla as the agency’s first Chief Operating Officer (COO). Monica’s role will expand from leading the power supply department to leading the agency’s activities related to energy policy, planning, procurement, operations, and regulatory requirements.

Monica has worked at SVCE for four years as Director of Power Resources, a role that she will continue to fulfill. During her time at SVCE, Monica led the negotiation and execution of over $1.8 billion in power purchase agreements for clean, renewable energy and storage projects. Monica also led the staff project oversight committee for the California Community Power long-duration energy storage procurement effort, on behalf of SVCE.

“Monica has been instrumental in executing the emissions reductions goals that the SV Clean Energy board has set,” said Girish Balachandran, SVCE CEO. “Our priority is ensuring a carbon-free and reliable energy portfolio while staying cost-competitive and innovative with our solutions. Monica’s experience, her innovative and strategic outlook, and leadership skillsets are well-suited to meet the demands of the agency.”

“I am excited to direct SVCE in its efforts to plan for and acquire additional clean resources in support of SVCE’s goals,” said Monica Padilla, SVCE COO and Director of Power Resources.  “Additionally, as our clean projects come online, I hope to use my experience to manage and operate these resources to ensure value to our communities.”

Prior to SVCE, Monica worked at the City of Palo Alto Utilities for 30 years and supported the development and implementation of Palo Alto’s Carbon Neutral Plan in 2013 and the management of Palo Alto’s electric portfolio.
