Silicon Valley Clean Energy CEO to Head New Community Choice Energy Agency

Tom Habashi to lead Monterey Bay Community Power in September 2017

Sunnyvale, Calif. – Silicon Valley Clean Energy Chief Executive Officer, Tom Habashi, announced that he will be departing from the agency on August 31 to begin a new role as CEO of Monterey Bay Community Power. After having successfully launched Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE) in April 2017, and completing customer enrollment for the majority of Santa Clara County communities in July, Mr. Habashi will lead Monterey Bay Community Power during the agency’s startup period and expected launch in April 2018.

“We are very thankful to Tom for his leadership in launching Silicon Valley Clean Energy,” said Rob Rennie, Town of Los Gatos Vice Mayor and SVCE Board Chair. “We are the first Community Choice Energy agency to come out the gates supplying carbon free energy and we owe much of that initiative to Tom’s leadership and vision. We are very fortunate to have had him for the time we did, and although we would have liked him to stay longer, we are also supportive of him following his passion to establish Community Choice Energy for more counties.”

Mr. Habashi accomplished much during his time as the CEO of SVCE, Santa Clara County’s Community Choice Energy (CCE) agency. SVCE is the first CCE to offer carbon-free electricity for its standard power supply mix, and the customer participation rate is currently above 98 percent. Mr. Habashi also led the development of SVCE’s three-year strategic plan, which highlights the agency’s mission, vision and goals.

“I am very proud of the team that we have built at SVCE. We have a strong operating team with deep energy industry experience to take SVCE forward. I know that the strategic direction adopted by our committed board will continue to push for what really matters – reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” says Habashi. “I look forward to following the progress of SVCE and am excited to further California’s Community Choice Energy movement by taking what I have learned from launching SVCE to get Monterey Bay Community Power up and running.”

During a special meeting of the SVCE Board of Directors on July 10, the board formed a subcommittee to begin the process of identifying an interim CEO and beginning the recruitment process.
