Community choice electricity providers receive honorable mention from Electric Innovation Awards
Bay Area, CA — Peninsula Clean Energy (PCE) and Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE) received honorable mention from the Electric Innovation Awards at Climate Week NYC for their joint work supporting member agencies in adopting 32 reach codes that incentivize all-electric construction and support EV charging at multifamily properties. PCE and SVCE are community choice energy providers serving nearly 600,000 households and businesses in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. Advancing the adoption and access to clean, electric equipment is core to both agencies.
The Electric Innovation Initiative is a new, 10-year effort to mainstream electrification technologies in the United States. The Electric Innovation Awards honor trailblazers in the electrification space. PCE and SVCE are recognized for their work empowering member communities to align building codes with their greenhouse gas reduction goals.
All-electric building codes are driving down construction costs, improving air quality, and transforming the market for electric technologies. By leveraging building codes, jurisdictions can support property owners in going electric when it makes the most sense – at the time of new construction or major remodels.
The adopted electric reach codes led to the permitting of thousands of all-electric, pollution free homes; and EV charging for at least 5,000 families living in multifamily homes. Constructing these homes all-electric will reduce construction costs and saving property owners roughly $100 million in retrofit costs.
“We’re proving electrification can scale quickly and equitably, with tangible benefits for communities across our service area and California,” Peninsula Clean Energy CEO Shawn Marshall said. “There is more to come as we continue to help our customers save money and improve their quality of life by converting from methane gas to clean, efficient electric heating and cooling and electric appliances.”
PCE and SVCE received public recognition at a Climate Week NYC awards ceremony on September 24 hosted by the Initiative’s co-founders David Hochschild, Chair of the California Energy Commission and Hawaii State Senator, Chris Lee, and featuring a keynote by former U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm.
“Receiving this honor is a testament to the fact that climate action is local action, and it is at the local level that we have the on-the-ground experience to enact sensible policies,” said SVCE Board Chair and Los Altos Hills Councilmember George Tyson. “When we work together, it is possible to find solutions that make sense for the planet and for people’s pocketbooks.”
TRC Companies, a global leader in consulting, construction, engineering and management services, provided technical knowledge and expertise to SVCE and PCE member agencies. “PCE and SVCE’s leadership is visionary, and we’re honored to support their agencies in adopting clean energy policies,” said Farhad Farahmand, Director at TRC.
