Community Power Provider Distributes $33M In Customer Bill Credits

All Silicon Valley Clean Energy customers to receive a credit on their upcoming electricity bill

Sunnyvale, CAToday, Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE), a local clean electricity provider, began issuing $33M to its customers through a one-time, automatic bill credit. This bill credit reinforces the agency’s commitment to community reinvestment and is one of SVCE’s ongoing efforts to provide some relief amid the increasing costs families and businesses have been experiencing. To date, customers have saved over $141M since 2017 with the yearly SVCE electric generation discount. The bill credits going out in September bring those savings to a total of $174M.

Residential customers will receive a credit of approximately $50; nearly 24% of the average total monthly energy bill in the month. Non-residential customers will also receive a credit, which will be determined by the customers’ historic energy use. Credits will be automatically applied to upcoming PG&E bills for electricity used in August, a month in which bills tend to be higher due to increased energy use during warmer summer weather.

“Reinvesting in our communities is core to the SV Clean Energy mission,” said SVCE Board Chair and Los Altos Hills Councilmember George Tyson. “We board members are here representing our communities, and we know that increasing costs have impacted our residents and businesses. There were many variables that aligned to provide us with this opportunity to deliver lump-sum bill relief. I’m proud of the agency and board for recognizing the value in distributing these funds directly to customer bills.”

The SVCE Board of Directors identified affordability as a top issue for the agency. During the mid-year budget review, SVCE identified a unique opportunity where operating costs and projections, current market conditions, and future forecasts resulted in funding being available to be returned directly to SVCE customers this year on top of the existing rate discount. While SVCE generation services only comprise approximately one-third of electricity bills, the remainder comes from PG&E transmission and distribution and other statewide charges. SVCE continues to seek opportunities to support affordability for its customers. The agency is working with policymakers to advocate for ways to increase energy affordability, supporting customers in upgrading to efficient electric appliances, and providing direct savings with competitive rates.

Since its formation, SVCE has provided competitive pricing and leveraged innovative financing to maximize savings to be passed on to customers. All 280,000 SVCE customers received a four percent discount on their electricity generation for the past several years. SVCE also provides an additional bill credit to customers enrolled in the CARE or FERA payment assistance programs, over $13M has been distributed through this credit to date.  The additional one-time bill credit of $33M brings customer savings to nearly 10% for 2025.

As a local, not-for-profit clean energy provider, SVCE reinvests in its member communities in many ways including offering grants to increase local resilience at critical public facilities, funding local events, distributing youth scholarships, and providing rebates to help customers transition to efficient, electric equipment that helps reduce local pollution.
