Learn how you can shift your energy use to save on your electricity bill.

Simple Ways to Cut Your Energy Use From 4 to 9 PM

With time-of-use rates, the price you pay for electricity depends on the time of day you use it. Off-peak times (when renewable energy is plentiful) have lower costs, while on-peak times (higher demand) cost more. These rates can vary by day, week, and season.
Remember: 4 to 9 is not the time!
Here are nine easy ways to shift energy use out of peak hours (4-9 p.m.) to help you save on your bill each month.

Limit use of high energy appliances
Avoid using the dryer, dishwasher (the delay start feature works well for this) and air conditioner (health & comfort permitting) during peak hours. Bonus savings if you opt to hang dry your clothes!

Wait to charge that EV
Avoid charging your EV during peak times. There are many smart charging apps than can help manage this for you, so that you don’t have to run to plug the car in at midnight.
Adjust that thermostat
You’d be surprised what a difference a few degrees warmer or cooler (less AC or heat, depending on the season) can make to the bill, without really impacting your comfort. Some smart thermostats can even be scheduled around your rate! Take efficiency to the next level with a heat pump heating and cooling system, $2,500 rebate available.

Use smart power strips
Connect multiple devices to smart power strips that will prevent excess energy waste when those devices are still plugged in but not in use.
Turn off unnecessary lights
The oldest tip in the book – but still worth noting. Switch off lights in rooms you’re not using to save electricity and reduce energy waste.

Use energy efficient bulbs
Replace incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs for longer-lasting and more energy-efficient lighting.
Pay attention to your windows
Open those curtains and blinds to maximize natural daylight in the winter; but close blinds and curtains in the summer to keep your home cool.

Shower earlier or later; saves hot water
If a morning shower is your thing, then you’re already using less energy! 9 PM is also an excellent time to take a shower without paying more for your hot water. Upgrading to a heat pump water heater ($2,000 rebate available) allows you to schedule your water heating to off-peak times!
Make sure you are on the best rate
When it comes to time-of-use rates, you have options. If you have an electric vehicle or heat pump, you could benefit from a special rate.
